"To understand La Solidaridad and its importance for this centennial commemorating both the Revolution and the martyrdom of Jose Rizal one must understand the role played by the heart and the soul of that newspaper, Marcelo H. Del Pilar. It is ironic that though attention has rightly been turned to Rizal and Bonifacio, La Solidaridad as one of the major vehicles of the rise of nationalism, it is appropriate to pay tribute to DEl PIlar's key role in creating this Filipino newspaper, as well as to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the contribution it made to the formation of a Filipino nation."
